Tile Repair and Replacement

Tile Repair and replacement is essential to fixing or restoring work, such as re-grouting (the process of reapplying grout to seal gaps), replacing broken tiles and adding an integral waterproof membrane.

Tile repair is important because it can protect your home or commercial space from water damage caused by a leaky roof, cracked pipe, broken appliance or storm.

Professional tile repair experts can detect and fix any defects that lead to a leak before its causes more damage to the other areas of the structure.

Tile repair should never be attempted without proper knowledge and training as it may cause more damage to the tile and structure.

What are the most common problems with a damaged tile?
The most common problems with a damaged tile include:
  • Missing or cracked grout - A missing or cracked grout is usually a result of a poor installation from an amateur so you might need to replace the entire section of the broken tile as well as patch up the spaces around it. A professional may also discover that your tile was not properly anchored to the wall or floor. Depending on the severity of the damage, there are two ways in which you can fix this problem:
    • Caulk it –
      • Fill out any spaces between tiles with backer rod and then fill up the gaps with caulk.
      • But if the damage is severe, you might need to replace the entire section of tiles.
    • Cracked Grout - The grout that separates your tiles can be damaged by different elements. If you have an abrasive cleaner or if there is too much humidity in the air, the grout may crack over time.
  • Broken or chipped tile. A broken tile usually occurs when there is too much heat in your bathroom or kitchen. It could be caused by water that has evaporated and accumulated over time.
  • Loose tiles - Tiles can lose their stickiness when they are not properly adhered to the floor or wall. Tile adhesive is very important for the stability of any tiled design.
  • Cracked tile backer board - Tile backer boards are commonly made with cement, fibreglass or plastic elements that make them durable and resistant to heat for floor installations; however, they can break if they are exposed to too much water over time.
  • Using the appropriate adhesive. Adhesive selection is critical for tiles that get wet or are installed on a floor or wall with direct exposure to sunlight. All of these factors help determine the best adhesive solution available on the market.

Can you repair damaged tile?
Yes. Even if tiles are chipped or cracked, you can generally remove the pieces that are loose and then repour the grout to fill in where damage has occurred. You may also have to clean both the tile and grout lines with muriatic acid before regrouting.

Can a ceramic tile be repaired?
Yes. But be aware that a broken ceramic tile can be dangerously sharp and will require special precautions and tools to remove safely. If the backsplash is installed over a wall with drywall or plaster behind it, you may find that removing the tiles strips away needed support for the drywall as well.

Can you repair a single tile?
Yes. If a tile has come loose, it can be reglued to the floor or wall with adhesive. You may have to take off some of the grout first so that glueing surfaces are clean and flat. The tile should be removed from the base-board as well as from the rest of its surrounding tiles if possible so that it can be re-glued without affecting the other tiles.

Can you fix a broken tile without replacing it?
Yes. Broken tiles can be repaired and colour-matched to the tile's grout lines. Be sure to remove all grout from around the broken edges, and carefully fit together the broken pieces before applying the glue.

How do you fix a tile joint?
Repairing a busted tile joint is tricky. It's best to have the help of an experienced tile-setter to achieve a professional-looking repair.

What is the best way to keep my tiles from cracking?
Tile joints and grout lines can loosen up over time, which leads to tile cracks. To prevent this, do not allow heavy objects to sit directly on the floor of your bathroom or kitchen. Also, locate radiators as far away from your tile as possible.

How can I remove damaged grout?
If you want to fix a tile joint, the first step is usually removing any damaged or loose grout. Remove all traces of damaged grout with a wire brush and replace it with fresh grout of the same colour. If you need to repaint your walls, choose a matching colour.

How do I repair a tile that is falling off the wall?
If your tiles are falling off the wall, it could be due to excessive moisture or humidity in your home. To fix this problem, you will need to remove all the old grout and replace it with new grout. Then make sure your grout sealant is in good condition.

How can I replace a broken tile?
To replace a broken tile, you will need to remove all the old grout from around it and clean out any debris. Apply adhesive to the back of the new tile and place it over the opening in your wall, making sure it's level. The adhesive should dry overnight.

How do I repair a tile on my floor?
If you have a tile that is cracking or chipped, fill in the cracks with grout and smooth it out with an instrument such as a butter knife. Or to replace a damaged tile, remove all the old grout from around where the tile is missing and clean out any debris. Use a damp rag to wipe off the tile, and use the adhesive included with the replacement tile to apply it over the damaged area. Let dry overnight and grout as normal.

How do you repair a chipped ceramic tile?
One of the most common problems with ceramic tile is that it cracks or chips. If this happens to you, use a putty knife and some grout to fill in the chipped areas on your pottery tile. Let the area dry overnight, then wipe away any excess grout using a damp rag before it dries completely.
